What BMI actually measures

BMI divides weight by height squared. It is one number built from two, and it treats every kilogram as identical. Muscle, fat, bone, water — all lumped together. For population-level screening it's cheap and useful. For telling one athlete from another, it's nearly useless.

Where body fat percentage wins

Body fat percentage separates your weight into what you want more of (lean tissue) and what drives metabolic risk (fat). Two people can share a BMI yet sit at opposite ends of health: one at 12% body fat, the other at 32%. The BMI reading can't tell them apart; a body fat measurement can.

When BMI still earns its keep

Be fair to BMI: it's free, reproducible, and needs no skill to calculate. In studies across large populations it correlates with risk of heart disease and diabetes. The problem isn't the number — it's treating it as a personal verdict when a tape-measure method gives a far more truthful view of one individual.
